A house on the next block burned down today. We hope nobody was hurt but could hear a helicopter on the ground nearby, and there were a lot of explosions. The girls and I watched the firefighters work for a while, and then practiced our fire drill and stop-drop-n-roll technique. There sure have been a lot of fires around here lately- last week a house about 10 blocks away burned down, and a couple of months ago a house on the next block (in the other direction) burned. Then of course there was my friends house, the next town over. It makes it hard to comfort the youngest ones that it will probably never happen to us when they see it so close to home! I guess all we can do as parents is tell them the truth- that anything can happen, but we can’t worry it- life’s too short to let the maybes weigh ya down. The best we can do is practice what we would do if it did happen at home so we don’t panic and know what to do.
